You can tell the difference
between seals
and sea lions - seals have shorter, stouter flippers and no
visible ear flaps!

SO ... WHAT — or — WHO
ARE THEY? |
|
San Franciscan and internationally
acclaimed sculptor Ruth Asawa [you've seen her Mermaid Fountain
at Ghirardelli Square, her San Francisco Celebration Fountain
on the steps of the Hyatt at Union Square, her Japanese Internment
Memorial in San Jose] has created the City's newest favorite
logo, The Mascot for Harvest From the Sea, The San Francisco
County Fair.
In Fact, Ruth has sculpted in clay
a whole family, a mother (the cow, in seal or sea lion parlance),
a father (the bull) and a baby (the pup). The figures will be
enlarged to nearly life-size and then painted and put on display
at Fair Time. Some of the painters will be famous already and
some will be famous once they've finished their seal! And some
of the seals will be auctioned (sponsor's choice).

PARADE OF SEALS
Ruth Asawa's seal sculpture has been
made into lifesize fiberglass models of the San Francisco Fair
Mascot. Sponsored seals will be
painted by local artists and displayed around the City and at
the Fair.
See pictures of the
first seal designed and painted by artist Amy Nelder.
Check here in October for a map of locations where you can view
the finished seals. |
|
AND there's a Special Seals Program
for schools. The Adopt-A-Seal Program
provides seal silhouettes on wood for decoration by students
and teachers. Entries and awards will be displayed at the Fair.
Please contact the Fair office for information.
